HOLIDAYMAKERS keen to get away this October half term are given the green light as Tier 2 restrictions, which cover the North-East, do not ban trips outside the area.

People are advised to minimise non-essential travel when travelling into, within and out of the affected areas but Tier 2 restrictions do not make it illegal.

Can I still go on holiday?

You can still go on holiday within the UK or abroad, but you should only do this with people you live with or have formed a support bubble with.

You need to follow any rules in the area you visit and be aware of the self-isolation rules when travelling to and from certain countries.

For example, people heading to North Yorkshire will find themselves under Tier 1 restrictions, while Tier 3 rules will apply when visiting Liverpool.

People can also visit North-East on holiday but must comply with the local restrictions.

Travelling on public transport and car sharing

People are advised to walk or cycle when possible.

When travelling by car, you can only travel with those in your household or support bubble - this is the same whether you're going on holiday or to the shop.

Public busses, trains and airports all require people to wear face coverings, unless you are exempt.

Are the airport, train stations and ports still open?

Teesside and Newcastle airports, train stations and ports are still open.
