IN the early 1980s, horses and carts rolled into town as Crown Street in Darlington was taken over to film parts of A Woman of Substance.
Based on the book was written by Barbara Taylor Bradford, it starred Jenny Seagrove, Barry Bostwick and Deborah Kerr. The drama was screened in 1984.
Echo reader John Hill, who sent us these amazing photographs, recalled: “I spent a couple of hours one Sunday morning watching the proceedings.
“Jenny was there and came across to say ‘hello’. I didn’t get a photo of her, sadly. I was probably a bit too shy to ask her if I could.”
Filming for the 1984 drama also took place in Richmond and at Aysgarth Falls
Aside from the cameras and action, it is interesting to see that Presto occupied what is now Wilko.
Did you watch any of the filming, either in Darlington or Richmond? Did you get to speak to any stars, or even get photographs of the main players? Or were you an extra in the show? Get in touch by emailing jo.kelly@newsquest.co.uk
The library featured in the scenes. Great picture of cast and crew
Remember when Presto food market was located where Wilkos is? Do you have any photographs to show how the town centre has changed over the years? Email jo.kelly@newsquest.co.uk
Stylo on the corner – it’s been many things over the years, most recently a firm that was selling DVDs, video games and digital devices
Tricky to tell if this smartly-dressed gentleman was part of the cast, or just passing through the town centre

Looking towards the library and the former post office, on the left, and the corner of Crown Street and Quebec Street
There appeared to be a lot of pushing things. Were you involved in the production? Or were you edited from the final drama? Tell us your story. Maybe you have appeared in another TV series or film?
