INSTALLING solar panels on a property in Darlington can increase average house prices in the area by £29,771, new research has revealed.

The research, by solar panel specialists EffectiveHomeco.uk, show sale prices of properties that have gone solar in the borough have increased by 14 per cent on average.

This means there is around £14,000 value added to a £100,000 property, £28,000 value added to a £250,000 properly and £70,000 to a £500,000 property.

The research was conducted due to the rising interest in a home’s sustainability and energy efficiency, which EffectiveHome.co.uk say is now a major influence in sale price.

Solar homeowners could also save £27,500 on electricity bills over a 30-year period – a reduction many see as critical in the current climate, with the UK experiencing a 37 per cent rise in energy bills during lockdown.

The ability to sell surplus solar energy to back to the national grid is also beneficial.

Dan Graby, director at EffectiveHome.co.uk said: “With house prices currently experiencing a mini boom, it’s interesting to see what impact solar energy, reduced energy bills and lowering carbon emissions is having.

“We hope our findings are a welcomed surprise to property sellers across Darlington, who may be unaware that making energy efficient changes to their home can make such a significant contribution to its valuation.

"There is a clear appetite to move to a property which is sensitive to spiralling energy prices, global warming and the environment we live.”
