After the news that Darlington’s St Cuthbert’s Church clock is to be taken down for repairs, we took a look for some photos of the clock and church in our archives.
The clock is more than century old, and has not worked for some time. It will be restored after more than two years of fundraising and has not had any major work since 1957.
The Friends of St Cuthbert launched an appeal for funds in May 2018, with the help of The Northern Echo’s Chris Lloyd. Since then, the committee, spearheaded by treasurer Gill Tiffin, has worked tirelessly to raise £17,000 towards the cost of the work.
Here we feature some great views of the church, plus some fantastic cars. Can you also spot some of the town landmarks that are no longer visible?

The churchyard in March 1971 when it was being landscaped and the centuries of stones were being removed as they were too dangerous. In the background are the three chimneys of the power station. Do you remember when this work was done? Do you have any photographs you would like to share?
Inside the church, you’ll find one of the oldest depictions in stone of a monarch in any church in the country. This is Henry III, who reigned from 1216 to 1272 and visited Darlington in 1260 – perhaps the residents were so impressed they carved him into the church
Feethams Field looking towards St Cuthbert’s Church in the late 19th Century. The River Skerne is to the right, and the cricket ground, which the football club made their home for 120 years, is behind the viewer. This view has certainly changed
Bit of cleaning and minor work in May 1983, although the real interest is down below with Derek Mason’s sports shop on Stonebridge and the new road layout of St Cuthbert’s Way. You can also see MFI in the background. Share your photos of the town centre from the 1980s with readers, in print and online
This picture was taken in December 1969 when coffee stall owner Marsh Diapaolo, from a well-known family of Italian ice cream makers, was told the stall would have to move after nearly 50 years because work on the new town hall was about to start
In March 2013, sky watchers in Britain were treated to another glimpse of Comet PanSTARRS, pictured here the icy comet with its trailing tail soars over the spires of St Cuthbert’s Church and Darlington Town Clock
Six of St Cuthbert’s bells going away to be recast in January 1937. The oldest bell is at the right end and dates from 1755
Great photo taken inside the church during a Heritage Open Day
Couldn’t resist a photo of some older cars outside the church. Do you recognise these classics?
Darlington’s Market Square sketched from High Row in 1820. Tubwell Row is on the left. The spire of St Cuthbert’s Church can be seen poking over the top of Bakehouse Hill. The town hall on the right was built in 1808 and replaced in 1864 by the town clock and Covered Market
