COMEDIAN Dave Johns, who shot to fame as the star of I, Daniel Blake, is being forced to claim benefits as a result of the coronavirus.

Gigs for the Wallsend-based funnyman have dried up due to fears over the Covid-19 outbreak and the 64-year-old has said it is a case ‘life imitating art’,

He became a household name as the protagonist in Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or and BAFTA-winning social realist drama about an unemployed man struggling with the benefits system.

The highly-acclaimed film led to roles in the UK box office smash Fisherman’s Friends, and soccer biography The Keeper.

But he admitted on Twitter he is not able to work at the minute.

He said: “Because of coronavirus all work cancelled, life imitating art!”

He later said: “I’ve just been told to claim employment and support allowance, this is going to be a laugh when I walk into the Job Centre.”
