BOMB disposal experts were called to a police station after a man walked in with a metal baton and a “suspicious” item.

A 48-year-old man was arrested in Sunderland yesterday afternoon after entering a city centre police station with a metal baton.

Northumbria Police says he was arrested at about 2.45pm at Sunderland Central Police station, in Waterloo Place.

After being detained, police searched his bag and found a "suspicious item".

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said bomb disposal teams were called as a precaution and put a cordon in place in the city centre.

The cordon was lifted when officers were satisfied the item was not an explosive.

Train services and the Metro network were temporarily stopped as officers carried out inquiries

A police spokesperson said: “We'd like to thank everybody for their cooperation and apologise for any disruption caused to residents, commuters and the wider community in Sunderland.”
