HEALTH chiefs have confirmed another COVID-19 case in the North-East.

A Gateshead resident has tested positive for the coronavirus and is currently self-isolating at home.

Gateshead Council said it is working closely with Public Health England and NHS colleagues to help plan and manage the situation.

Alice Wiseman, director of Public Health for Gateshead, said: “Gateshead has one confirmed case of COVID-19 and we want to wish the affected person a speedy recovery.

“I’d like to reassure people that the risk to the general public currently remains low and Gateshead Council is working with health colleagues to do everything we can to delay the spread of the virus within our communities.

“Good hygiene is the best prevention and there are some simple steps you can take to protect you and your family by washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and if you cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.

“If you have new symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for seven days from when your symptoms started.

“It is really important that in order to protect others, you don’t go to your doctor, pharmacy or hospital. You do not need to contact NHS 111 to tell them you’re staying at home.

“There’s lots of advice on how people can protect themselves and others online at www.gov.uk/coronavirus”

In Hartlepool, the borough council took the precautionary step of closing the visitor centre at Summerhill Country Park after the operators of the on-site café self-isolated after feeling unwell.

The visitor centre is due to reopen on Monday following a deep clean. The council has also taken the decision to postpone Monday’s “Face the Public” event at the Civic Centre.

In the latest figures released yesterday, Public Health England said there are 49 confirmed cases in the North-East and Yorkshire.
