A BOY has been hospitalised after being attacked by a group of teenagers on the Metro.

Police have launched an investigation after the group attacked the 11-year-old on the Metro as it travelled between Felling and Central Station on Tuesday evening.

It was reported that the schoolboy was the victim of a assault that took place at about 8.20pm before other members of the public came to his aid.

He got off the Metro at Newcastle’s Central Station before he was taken to hospital by paramedics with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and police are working closely with Nexus to identify all of those involved in the assaults.

Detective Inspector Louise Jenkins said: “This was a nasty assault that has resulted in an 11-year-old boy being admitted to hospital.

“He has some really nasty injuries but the emotional impact that this will have on him cannot be overstated.

“We are working hard to identify the group responsible and are working with Nexus to review any CCTV coverage of the Metro and the station.

“Anyone who witnessed the assaults, or who knows those involved, is encouraged to contact police.”

A Nexus spokesman said: “We are supporting the police with their investigation into this offence. Behaviour like this on the Metro system is totally unacceptable.

“We will review all available CCTV to help the officers to catch those responsible for the assault. We urge anyone with information to get in contact with the police.

“Offending of this severity on Metro is rare, but when it does occur we do all that we can to bring the culprits to justice.”
