A MAN has died following a two-vehicle collision which is now being investigated by police.

The crash happened just after 7pm last night on Sunderland Road, Felling, Gateshead, at the junction with East Hill Road.

Emergency services attended and found a Vauxhall Corsa which was travelling west towards Gateshead had been in collision with a Citroen Berlingo which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Corsa, who was 54, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specialist family liaison officers from Northumbria Police.

A female passenger in the Corsa and the male driver of the Berlingo were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, has now asked for anybody who witnessed the collision to come forward.

He said: “This was a serious collision that has sadly resulted in the death of a man.

“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this devastating time and we will continue to offer them any support they need.

“This is clearly a tragic time for them and I would ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with their loss.

“We are committed to finding out exactly what caused this collision, which happened on a busy road with a number of other road users in the vicinity.

“I am now appealing to those road users who were travelling on Sunderland Road at that time to come forward with any information or dashcam footage. It may prove crucial in allowing us to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.”
