WITNESSES to a serious assault which left a man with multiple injuries to his head and face are being asked to come forward.

Police were called to T&S Barbers on Whiteleas Way, in South Shields, following reports that a customer had been assaulted just after 5pm on February 24.

A 36-year-old man required hospital treatment after suffering multiple injuries to his head and face.

Two men, aged 38 and 31, have been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possessing an offensive weapon and are due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses.

Detective Constable Stu Havery said: “This was a particularly nasty assault which saw the victim brutally attacked as he was getting his hair cut.

“He suffered a number of injuries and was taken to hospital as a result.

"We have been carrying out a number of enquiries into the incident and have now charged two men in connection with the assault. They will appear before the courts in the coming weeks.

“This incident happened on a busy street with a number of bystanders nearby, so we believe there are members of the community out there who have information that could help with our ongoing enquiries.

“We would therefore ask those people to do the right thing and get in touch with us, as their information could prove crucial to this ongoing investigation.”

Any witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting reference 816 240220 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Alternatively you can email 140@northumbria.pnn.police.uk.
