He appeared at Teesside Crown Court this morning, where he was further remanded in custody.
Members of Mr Black's family were in the public gallery during the short hearing where Costello spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.
Judge Stephen Ashurst adjourned the case until May 11 when a plea and trial preparation hearing will take place and Costello will be expected to enter a plea to the charge.
Earlier this week, family friend Koren Jackson, who has set up an online fundraiser to help Taylor's family, said: "Taylor was such a kind boy, every room he walked into he lit up. His smile will live on forever and always.
"We are all so lucky to have had him in our lives."
