A MAN has been arrested following a multi-vehicle crash which left one dead and two seriously injured on Tuesday morning.
The 37-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after several vehicles, including an Arriva Bus and a lorry, crashed on the A167 at Beaumont Hill in Darlington.
The incident, which took place at around 6.45am, resulted in the death of one man while a man and woman, in separate cars were taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
In an update on Thursday, police confirmed that both the man and woman currently remain in hospital in a serious condition.
Tuesday's crash resulted in the closure of part of the A167 in both directions and severe tailbacks on the southbound carriageway of the A1(M).
A Durham Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or was in the area shortly before 6.45am to get in touch.
"They are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have any dashcam footage of the collision, or the moments leading up to it.
"Please call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 34 of October 8."
The 37-year-old has since been released pending further enquiries.
