POLICE investigating the death of a 72-year-old man in a hit-and-run have made two further arrests.

William Arthur Lewis of Billingham, died shortly after being hit by a silver Land Rover Discovery at around 8.30pm on Friday, August 23.

It is believed the Land Rover had been travelling along Belasis Avenue when it left the carriageway at a roundabout near Chiltons Avenue and hit the man.

Police said the Land Rover then came to rest in the junction of Tibbersley Avenue in Billingham, before the driver got out and "left the scene" in another vehicle.

Cleveland Police said: "Officers have this morning (Friday, August 30) further arrested the 37-year-old man questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"Officers also arrested a 22-year-old man this morning on suspicion of assisting an offender.

"Both are in custody awaiting questioning."

Detective Inspector Jon Tapper also urged any witnesses to the alleged incident who have not yet spoken to police to come forward. He said: "We know there were people in and around the scene who were using phones at the time and I would urge these people to get in touch with us via the 101 number, quoting Event 144994.
