A WOMAN has been taken to hospital after she was rescued by firefighters.

Four fire engines and around a dozen firefighters attended the RAFA Club, on Cockton Hill, in Bishop Auckland this afternoon.

Crews from Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Crook and Peterlee were called to the blaze at 12.37pm.

Firefighters wore breathing apparatuses and used a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

A woman was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by a paramedic.

She was later taken to hospital and witnesses said she was 'shaken'.

One witness said: "We can't see smoke but there's a been a small fire inside the RAFA club office and someone has been rescued."

Fire crews left the scene at 1.44pm.
