A WOMAN was assaulted outside of a bank in Bishop Auckland town centre, police have confirmed.

The woman, who has not been named by police, was flown to James Cook University Hospital for treatment following the incident on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "We can confirm that there was an assault on Newgate Street, in Bishop Auckland at around 5.40pm on Friday, June 28.

"A woman was flown by air ambulance to James Cook University Hospital with head injuries and the victim has since been released."

Anyone who witnessed the assault is asked to contact Durham Police on 101.
