THE family of a British man who died in a Turkish airport after being asked to leave a flight back to the UK has been told the coroner needs more information from authorities there before an inquest can go ahead.

Andrew Westlake, 29, died from a fall after he was thought to have jumped over a railing at Dalaman Airport in May last year, an inquest review hearing in Durham was told.

The father from Annfield Plain, County Durham, had been on holiday with his family and had been asked by staff to leave a flight home due to concerns about his behaviour, assistant coroner Dr Leslie Hamilton told the brief hearing in County Hall in Durham.

At the time eyewitnesses described how he fell about 50ft after jumping over a ledge inside the terminal.

Mr Westlake’s mother and sister were in court to hear Dr Hamilton say the coroner’s service had got a “bundle of documents” from abroad but they had not received the Turkish post-mortem or toxicology report.

He said more attempts will be made to gather this information, via the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and a further review will be held on August 19 ahead of a full inquest at a later date.
