THOUSANDS of people headed to the high street to celebrate the services of the armed forces.

Young and old showed their pride on Redcar High Street on Saturday, June 29, in the town's annual Armed Forces Day.

The day began with a parade through the town, a raising of the colour and a service, where resident Jean Craggs was presented with flowers on her 100th birthday.

There was also a special flyover by a spitfire and a blessing from Rev Rachel Harrison.

Performances from local groups entertained those attending with a 'flashmob', dancing and music.

Other highlights included music from vintage singers The Lipsticks, choral music, drill display competitions involving cadets from the army, air and sea forces as well as brass band music.

There were a number of activities including face painting and balloon modelling.

Councillor Karen King, Deputy Leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, said: β€œIt was moving to see the level of support and pride in the community for our armed forces with so many people coming together to demonstrate their appreciation. It was a truly wonderful day.”
