WOODLAND Road in Darlington was blocked in both directions on Friday morning following a crash between a car and an ambulance.

The accident happened at the Hollyhurst Road junction, close to Darlington Memorial Hospital, at about 7.20am.

A Citroen car travelling along Woodland Road towards the town centre was involved in a collision with an ambulance.

By 9am police had reopened one lane of Woodland Road for motorists travelling towards Cockerton but vehicles travelling in the opposite direction were diverted on to Hollyhurst Road while the vehicles could be recovered.

The ambulance was loaded on to the back of a recovery truck and taken away.

An attempt was make to move the Citroen off the road to allow traffic to start flowing again but its wheels were jammed, delaying recovery.

Woodland Road has now been fully reopened.
