A POLICE officer came to the rescue of a pregnant woman who was stuck on the wrongside of closed road as she attempted to make her way to hospital.
Traffic officer Darren Williamson, of Cleveland and Durham Roads Policing Unit, was just about the turn away the anxious couple until he heard the words 'she's in labour'.
The kindhearted cop opened the barriers and switched on his blue lights to escort the couple to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.
Taking to Twitter he wrote:
Well that was a first...During a seemingly uneventful night shift, conducting road closure due to RTC.

A police spokeswoman said the force is now keen to meet up with the couple to help them celebrate their new arrival.
She said: "Imagine the scenario, youβre an expectant parent, setting off for the hospital and knowing the time is near to welcome your bundle of joy. But stop. Thereβs a police roadblock and a road closed ahead.
"In a first for his 12 years of service, officer Darren Williamson from our dog unit, turned special escort to help a mum-to-be in labour last night (June 26). Was this you? If so please get in touch with us and let us know how things worked out, weβd love to hear."
