AN AWARD-WINNING golf course and country club is following the recent success of its junior team by introducing more beginners to the game.

Woodham Golf and Country Club, near Newton Aycliffe, features a high-class restaurant and bar, a fully-stocked pro shop, and an 18-hole parkland course, which incorporates waterways, lakes, and woodland for a scenic and memorable round.

Woodham’s 300 members have plenty of reason to be proud of their club, following two major regional wins for its junior team.

Ernie Wilson, the club’s resident golf professional, said: “Our current junior team is without a doubt the best in the history of the club. They won both the Junior Durham Southern League last season, and the Durham County Knockout Cup.”

The junior team’s triumphs follow a period of dedicated improvement to the golf course.

Ernie said: “There’s been a lot of activity over the last few seasons to help bring out the potential of the course. We’ve been particularly focused on improving our greens and tees.

“We’ve hired a professional agronomist who advises on things like our soil profiles, aeration levels, what grass species we have, and so on, and how we can improve the experience for golfers.

“The results have been great to see – the greens especially have come on very well since we started injecting sand to firm them up a bit.”

“We also won the County Golf Development Group of the Year award a couple of years ago, so it’s really good to see investment in the club beginning to take effect.”

Out of around 50 clubs in the county, Woodham is also one of just four chosen to trial the Girls’ Golf Rocks campaign.

Ernie explains: “Girls Golf Rocks is aimed at getting more girls and young women, between the ages of 5 and 18, playing.  They receive personal coaching over 7 weeks, and after completing the course, they can continue onto our Sunday Academy if they want additional coaching.

“This all means that, no matter whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced player, there’s never been a better time to grab your clubs and play a round at Woodham.”
