A CORDON was put in place after a woman was allegedly raped in Newcastle this morning.

At about 10am police received a report that a 30-year-old woman had been attacked in Byker.

She was walking from Jubilee Terrace towards Bothal Street when she was approached by a man she did not know and said she was raped in bushes behind a bus stop on Bothal Street.

The man responsible then fled the area and the woman was able to get to a friend's house and contact police.

She is being supported by specially trained officers and a rape investigation has been launched.

Detective Inspector Paul Young, of the rape investigation team, said extra patrols will take place in the area over the weekend.

He said: "We are offering the victim in this case all the support we can and officers will be carrying out dedicated patrols over the weekend.

"They will be there to offer reassurance but will also be supporting the investigative team as we try to identify the suspect.

"This has happened in broad daylight, shortly before 10am, and so people may have seen him leaving the area.

"He is described as white, aged in his late 20s and with a distinctive pointed nose. He was wearing dark coloured shorts and a matching jacket.

"Anyone who may have seen this man, or who lives in the area and has CCTV, is encouraged to call police immediately."

If you can assist the police investigation then contact officers on 101 quoting log 284 21/06/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
