Radio 1's Big Weekend in Middlesbrough: Everything you need to know

More than 64,000 people are expected to be entertained as one of the biggest festivals comes to Middlesbrough's Stewart Park on Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26.

Getting there

By car

Organisers say: "Do not try and drive to Stewart Park. There are no onsite car parks and roads in the surrounding area will be closed or have restrictions in place. Vehicles parked in undesignated places will be towed away."

Shuttle Bus Services: There are dedicated shuttle bus services to and from the centre of Middlesbrough and other nearby towns. Tickets for the shuttle bus service, which is running both to and from Middlesbrough Town Hall to Stewart Park, must be bought before the deadline of 5pm on May 22. Shuttle wristbands can be collected from Middlesbrough Town Hall Box Office up to 4pm on May 23.

Park & Ride (Saturday and Sunday only): A park and ride service will be running from Middlehaven and should be booked in advance for £10 which includes 2 ride wristbands and return. See the Middlesbrough Council website for more information.

Walking
Stewart Park is 3.5 miles (approx 1hr) walk from Middlesbrough town centre.

Road closures and access

There will be a number of road closures and diversions.

Full closure of the visitor car park at Stewart Park will commence at 4am on Thursday, and run until Saturday, June 1. Prissick overflow car park will be made available for visitors outside of the event period.

Stewart Park will be closed to non-ticket holders from 6pm on Friday until 7.30am on Monday, 27 May.

Road closures will be put in place from 9.30am on Friday until 4am on Monday 27 May.

Clearways (no stopping) will be in place on parts of Ladgate Lane, Marton Road, Stokesley Road, The Derby, Broadwell Road, Ormesby Road and Cargo Fleet Lane.

A 20mph speed limit will be in place on roads surrounding Stewart Park.
Disabled access

Those who registered for Disabled Access Parking will be sent a Disabled Access Guide detailing transport and parking information, event details and an access site map showing the location of accessible facilities.

Security

Stringent security measures will be in place at the weekend, including the use of security wands and sniffer dogs.

Every bag that comes into the event will be searched. Bags must be no bigger than A4 and limited to one per person. Security staff may also search bags once you are in the arena.

You are also likely to undergo a search as you enter- this may include the use of search wands. You could also be searched once you are in the arena.

Security staff will be visible and on patrol both inside and outside of the venue.

A network of CCTV cameras has been installed around the venue, these will be monitored from the event control room.

There will be Police patrols around the event and local area.

Clothes for any weather.

Sunscreen

Enough cash and / or your bank card – there are cash machines on site, all of which accept all UK debit cards. Some of the machines will also accept international credit cards. A fee of £2.50 will be charged to use the onsite cash machines.

ID if you look under 18 in order to be admitted to the festival. ID will also be required if you want to buy alcohol and look 25 or under. Acceptable forms of ID are a valid passport; valid photo card driving licence; a photographic ID card with the National Proof of Age Standards Scheme – PASS - hologram.

Medication – if you need to bring medication, please bring a doctor’s note or a prescription for it. 

An empty plastic bottle 500ml or less so you can use the free drinking water points onsite.

Cigarettes & tobacco will not be available to purchase within the event site.

Food and drink

More than 40 food outlets will offer a range of meals and there will be three main bars and pop-up coffee shops for refreshments.

Dishes on offer include local Parmos, Loaded Fries, Eazy Cheezy burgers, Mac n Cheese, Stone baked Pizza, Vegan Indian, Mexican, Chinese, and Loaded Dogz. There are vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options.

You may bring in food and soft drinks to the event for your own personal consumption provided that any soft drinks are in unopened and sealed plastic or paper containers with a capacity of 500ml or less, restricted to one per person.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: "We want everyone to have a fantastic, hassle-free experience, so a great deal of planning has gone into ensuring that we have the right transport links, and that we're as environmentally friendly as we can be.

"Please plan ahead and organise both arrival and leaving arrangements in advance - and have a great time."
