A MAN has died after his car collided with a HGV in the early hours of this morning.
The 24-year-old suffered fatal injuries following the collision on the A19 southbound, near Washington, just after midnight.
The emergency services rushed to the scene of the collision, at the A1231 junction, but the man sadly passed away.
Specialist officers from Northumbria Police are currently supporting his family.
Police closed the road for six hours to carry out enquiries and recover the vehicles.
A 56-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He is currently in police custody and is assisting officers with their enquiries.
Police are now eager to hear from anybody who witnessed the collision, or drivers that were in the area at the time and who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch.
