COUNCIL

THE ruling Labour group of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council cannot be accused of doing U-turns any longer, for to complete a U-turn you need to know where you have come from and, more importantly, where you are going. It seems that the Labour group's election manifesto was written with no knowledge of what was affordable or even sensible.

Its members pledged to keep the James Finnegan Hall in Eston and the town hall, yet, within months, they have conceded that those premises cannot be saved. The previous coalition told them that the costs to repair/refurbish were not an option, but Labour ignored the facts and made false promises.

The idea for re-siting some facilities in Eston is not Labour's, it was already being considered by the coalition on land the council owns by the City Learning Centre.

Labour is without a sense of direction and heading for a situation where the electorate will realise that Labour says one thing and does another. - Valerie Halton, Conservative councillor, Guisborough.
