House builder Wimpey has agreed to give up to half-a-dozen new streets being built in the town the names of some of Hartlepool United's all-time favourite players.
The gesture is to mark the soccer club's centenary season, next year.
Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond yesterday launched an online poll for people to vote for their choice.
Mr Drummond said: "I am sure that everyone will have their own views on the best players to have turned out for Pools over the years, but we have tried to come up with a shortlist that recognises significant achievement by players.''
Hartlepool United FC chief executive Russ Green said: "This is yet another unique venture involving the town and its football club. It also endorses the importance with which the people of Hartlepool view the club within the community."
