A GRADUATE from a successful adult education scheme is encouraging more people to take advantage of the free training.
Shaun Richardson, from Spennymoor, recently completed the national test level two qualification in numeracy at the Leap Skills for Life Centre, in Barnard Castle.
Mr Richardson, works in patient transport but needed the qualification in order to be eligible for a paramedic's course.
Leap is offering people across south-west Durham the chance to sit the national tests in maths and English at level one and two.
"The tutors were incredibly helpful, pleasant and patient," said Mr Richardson.
"I am hoping the qualification will enable me to progress though a university access course and eventually lead to me becoming an ambulance paramedic."
A national test pass at level two is equivalent to a high pass at GCSE level and organisers hope more people will join the course.
Development worker Jill Wales said: "It's not like a GCSE where there's a fixed date for an exam. You will sit the test only when you're ready."
