MORE than two dozen armed police are heading back to the streets - after spending ten years guarding the Prime Minister.

The two sergeants and 23 constables provided round-the-clock security at Myrobella, the constituency home of Tony Blair when he was MP for Sedgefield.

The police presence has been maintained at Mr Blair's Trimdon Colliery home since he quit as Prime Minister in June.

Now the armed protection team (APT) is now being wound down and the officers involved redeployed to the two area commands for a return to operational policing.

Over the next few weeks all Home Office and force equipment will be gradually removed from Myrobella and the police security post dismantled.

By mid-November the armed police team members should all be assigned to their new postings.
