THE annual Houghton Feast, which has its origins in the Middle Ages, is under way.

A procession through the town, started at the sports centre and proceeded to Wheeler Street, on Saturday.

Although the festival dates back to the 1100s, it was revived in its modern form in 1967 and is supported by Sunderland City Council.

The council's member with the portfolio for culture, Councillor Mel Speding, said: "The people of Houghton are proud to be celebrating 40 years of the popular Houghton Feast, which is steeped in tradition and dates back to medieval times.

"Traditional events will be joined by more recent additions to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

"Local people will have the chance to take part in many events."

Today, an ox will be roasted on Rectory Field and there will be a fireworks display on Durham Road playing fields, at 7.30pm.

The festival continues until Sunday, when there will be a family walk from Durham Wildlife Trust Headquarters, at Rainton Meadows, at 1pm,
