A YOUNG cyclist is critically ill after he was knocked off his bike by a car.
The 15-year-old suffered serious head injuries after colliding with BMW on Sunderland Road, South Shields, South Tyneside, at 6.25pm yesterday.
Passers-by called for an ambulance and the youngster was taken to Newcastle General Hospital, where he is being treated in the intensive care unit.
His condition is described life-threatening.
The accident happened at the junction of Sunderland Road and Shields Road.
Police closed off the roads and traffic was diverted as officers carried out investigations late into the night.
