AN annual town fair which dates back to the Middle Ages was opened by the Mayor of Sunderland yesterday.

Councillor Les Scott launched the celebrations for the festival of Houghton Feast.

The ancient festival originated in the 1100s as a two-day fair and, since its revival in 1967, has extended to ten days and attracts thousands of people to the town every year.

A parade took place last night, where residents showed off their lanterns.

The procession started at Houghton Kepier School and continued to the Broadway in front of St Michael and all Angels Church.

Crowds were entertained by Theatre Mi Mi and students from City of Sunderland College, along with local band Loon.

The mayor switched on the illuminations to officially open the festival.

Val Craggs, events director at Sunderland City Council, said: "We are excited for the opening ceremony of Houghton Feast as it celebrates 40 years in its present form."
