A COMMUNITY stalwart has been crowned the queen of a town's annual festival.
Mary Hagley, 81, from Shiney Row, is the Queen of Eventide at this year's Houghton Feast.
The event dates back to the 16th Century, when it was founded by Bernard Gilpin, a well-known clergyman.
When the event was re-formed in 1967 the committee decided that an event was needed for the older generation so the Queen of Eventide was introduced.
Every year, members of Age Concern in Houghton nominate a female member for their commitment and efforts in the community.
The title comes with many official duties, including leading the Houghton Feast carnival parade, which takes place tomorrow.
The Deputy Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Mary Smith, presented Mrs Hagley with her crown at the opening of the Age Concern event at the Welfare Hall, in Houghton Sports Complex.
A spokesman for Sunderland City Council said: "Mary is extremely deserving of the title following 27 years as an active volunteer, giving up her time to support many local community groups."
The opening ceremony will take place in the Broadway, Houghton, today, at 7pm.
Community groups are invited to take part in tomorrow's carnival parade, through the town centre, at 1.30pm. The feast runs until October 14.
