A Tourist information centre has been chosen as an information point for one of the region's most fascinating birds.

A board with details about the Northern Kites project has been erected at the centre in Flatts Road, Barnard Castle.

It is hoped visitors will stay in the town to watch red kites, which have flourished since re-introduction to the North-East three years ago.

"We're very pleased to have been picked as an information hub for the red kite," said Jo Fergus, member for tourism for Teesdale District Council.

"The Northern Kites initiative is a great project, reinvigorating our countryside with native birds, and visitors will be directed to us from 11 other points in the area to learn more about them."

The panel provides information and history about the birds, as well as tips about where to see them in the region.

News and events will be updated on a regular basis.

A red kite night is being held on Wednesday, October 17, at The Moorcock Inn, in Eggleston, near Barnard Castle, from 7pm, when members of the Northern Kites group will talk about the project, the return of the birds to the region and answer questions.
