TEENAGERS are to watch a hard-hitting play highlighting the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs.

The APE theatre company is to perform the play, called Pills, Thrills and Automobiles, to students at four schools in Stockton, in a bid to drive home the road safety message.

The play is a documentary taken from original interviews, and features the true story of four 18-year-olds who, after a weekend of drug taking and little sleep, crashed on a motorway, in 1997. Two of the youngsters died in the accident.

Pills, Thrills and Automobiles has been approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers and uses animation and film as a backdrop to the story.

Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Borough Council's cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: "The play is followed by interactive workshops, and we hope the students will gain a lot from seeing the production.

Performances will take place at Ian Ramsey and Norton schools, today, and at Blakeston and Egglescliffe tomorrow.
