A MOTHER has become the 1,500th resident to take part in a crime-fighting project in Hartlepool.
Wendy Cooling was shocked when she discovered thieves had tried to break into home, in Wensleydale Street, causing damage to windows at the back of the house.
She was referred by local police to Colin Hopkins, from New Deal for Communities, who arranged for her home to be made secure as part of a free home security check.
He also referred her to workers at Victim Support, who helped her to come to terms with the attempted break-in.
She said: "I was very concerned about the damage to my property and the attempted break-in, but thanks to Colin I feel much safer.
"I wanted to keep the house secure for my kids and to make them feel safe. It's great that I'm the 1,500th resident, and it just shows how much a project like this is needed."
Mr Hopkins said: "This project has reached a very important milestone and has helped a great number of residents across the town.
"It is such a simple, yet effective project that secures doors and windows.
"There is nothing better than a project that helps to make people feel safer in their homes, and I am proud that 1,500 homes have benefited from this."
