POLICE are trying to trace the driver of a car involved in three-vehicle crash that left a young girl seriously hurt.

A Durham Police spokesperson said officers were alerted to the collision in The Avenue, Seaham, at 8.45pm on Saturday night.

The spokeperson said: "There is an investigation ongoing to locate one of the drivers. There has been a young child injured requiring medical attention."

Police will be releasing further details later.

A North East Ambulance spokesperson said: "We got a call at 8.45pm on Saturday. We dispatched two paramedic ambulances and also a doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance who was transported by our car.

"We took one young child to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, who was treated on the way in the ambulance by a doctor and paramedics for a serious head injury."

One witness was reported as saying a silver Vauxhall Vectra "hit a car with a woman and her kids inside", before hitting a car on the other side of the road which was stationary.
