LEADING Liberal Democrats from the North-East have joined the flood of tributes for former party leader Paddy Ashdown, who died on Saturday aged 77 following a short illness.

Sir Vince Cable and past Lib Dem leaders joined Theresa May, Jeremy Corbyn and others including Tony Blair in hailing the dedication and decency of the politician and former commando.

Lord Beith, Lib Dem deputy leader from 1992 to 2000, said: “Paddy Ashdown was a remarkable leader and it was both a pleasure and a daily challenge to serve as his deputy, because of his tremendous energy and fierce determination.

“He transformed the fortunes of the Liberal Democrats, and he was always thinking and planning ahead of everyone else. He believed deeply in Liberal values and fought to advance them both nationally and internationally. British public life today has too few people with his remarkable qualities.”

Greg Stone, chair of the North-East Liberal Democrats, said: “Paddy Ashdown was a great man who inspired many people including myself to become Liberal Democrats. He led from the front and we have been proud to have marched behind his banner.

“In ten years as leader he took the party from the wilderness to one of its best ever election performances in 1997.

“He was a passionate and principled champion of Liberalism and of progressive politics and he will be hugely missed by all who share the Liberal cause. Our thoughts are with Jane and his family.”
