ONE man has died and another is seriously injured following two incidents in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the assaults and are currently in police custody facing questioning.

Both incidents took place in Stockton in a three-hour period on Sunday, December 23.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “The first incident occurred at around 4.30am this morning, when officers were called to a report of an alleged serious assault on Yarm Road.

“As a result, a man has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for a fractured skull and other injuries to his body and he is in stable condition.

“Shortly after at around 7.15am, officers were called to another incident on Westbourne Street where a man had suffered serious injuries to his body.

“He was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced deceased.”

Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance, were called to the incident on Westbourne Street, with police officers continuing to gather forensic evidence from the scene hours later.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Two paramedic ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and the HEMS medic from the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene.

“We treated and took to hospital two patients suffering stab wounds, head injuries and abdominal injuries, all causing high blood loss.”

Cleveland Police are reassuring members of the public that more patrols will be carried out in the area in the coming days.

Cleveland Police Detective Superintendent Warren Shepheard said: “We understand the levels of concern caused by incidents of this nature and increased patrols will remain in the area whilst enquiries continue.

“Please approach our officers with any concerns you may have and they will happily assist.”

A spokeswoman for the force confirmed there will be no further information released about either incident until December 24.
