A COUPLE will be having an extra special Christmas as they celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary today.
Dennis and Jean McGuire, from Darlington, met for the first time in 1957 at the Palais de Dance in Stockton.
They were engaged a year later and married at St Thomas Aquinas Church, on North Road, December 26 1958.
“Quite a number of Dennis’s family worked in business, so Boxing Day was a convenient day for people,” said Mrs McGuire, aged 79.
“It’s always a holiday on your anniversary but having it around Christmas time makes it that bit more special.”
The couple enjoyed going to dances in Darlington and Stockton where they shared a love for the ballroom.
After retiring, the pair spent a number of years travelling across the globe.
Mr McGuire, who celebrated his 81st birthday, said: “One thing I always remember was when we took a cruise to Jamaica. We got up to do the Foxtrot, which is one of our favourite dances, but there was quite a swell and the boat was rocking all over, and we couldn’t keep our footwork.”
Mr and Mrs McGuire will be celebrating with their four children, ten grandchildren, and friends and family.
