Here at rE-view we love our video games and we know you do to.
So we decided to have a look at 2 of the so-called next generation consoles, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii.
What about the Playstation 3 you ask? Well we played it but have decided to put our judgement on hold for the time being due to the lack of games for the system at the moment. You can be sure of one thing though rE-view will be bringing you its judgement soon!
As for the 360 and the Wii, rE-view put together a crack team together consisting of Colin, Oliver, Sian, Sadie and Oli to bring you a real gamers verdict of the consoles.
First up was the Xbox 360, the first of the new next-gen machines released way back in Dec 05. The 360 boasts High-Def graphics, that to be seen running at it's best needs the added purchase of a HD TV, expensive if you don't already have one. But don't let that put you of, it runs fine on your standard def TV's. The 360's are available in a number of packages some with hard drives some without; there really are a lot of different packages to choose from. All we can say is if you are looking to buy one do your research; pick the one that is best for you and your budget. Whichever package you choose you won't be disappointed the 360 is a hardcore machine with some really hardcore games to play. If you're a fan of driving games or first person shooters (FPS) then the 360 has some of the best available. The Project Gotham Racing games and Forza are a must for all the petrol heads out there, and for all the FPS fans all we have to say is "Halo".
Our rE-view team were very impressed to say the least with the 360. They played a variety of games on the machine covering a number of genres, these included Fight Night, Call Of Duty 3, Project Gotham 3, Rockstars excellent Table Tennis and the groups favourite Guitar Hero 2.
Next up was the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo have brought us something different this time with Wii. Gone are the traditional controllers replaced with a controller that looks like a TV remote. The Wii remote as it's known is full of motion sensors that detect movements as it's waved around as you control on screen characters. When Nintendo first showed Wii to the world it was greeted with the words gimmick, but after you spend a couple of hours in it's company, you soon realise that it works and it sure is a lot of fun. The Wii comes packaged with Wii Sports and it is simply one of the most enjoyable games that have ever been packaged with any machine. Bowling, Golf and Tennis are the perfect introduction to the joys of the Wii and it's innovative controller. This is the machine that will have your whole family playing video games, as the control system is so easy to use. While it's not as powerful as the 360 and it's graphics come no way near the quality of the 360's. It more than makes up for any shortcomings in terms of fun and gameplay. The games our team looked at apart from Wii Sports were Mario Strikers, Rayman, Cooking Mama, Wii Play and the truly awesome Zelda.
Now onto what the team had to say about the machines.
Both machines were rated out of 10 on a number of categories Controls, Games Available, Graphics, Sound and fun factor.
Controls- the Wii came out on top with a top score of 8 while the 360 could only manage a high of 7. So chalk one up for the Wii and it's fun and interactive control system.
Graphics- There was always only going to be one winner and that's the High-Def delights of the 360 hitting a high of 10. The Wii really can't compete in the graphic department only scoring a 6.
Sound- Again the 360 came out on top hitting a high note of 9 against the Wii's 8.
Games Available- Well it had to be the 360 didn't it the biggest reason it's been out a lot longer. There are loads of games out there for the 360 as well as downloadable classics via Xbox Live Arcade and on top of that is Microsofts excellent online service that allows you to play many of the games with fellow gamers around the world. Don't forget it will also play most of the old Xbox games as well.
The Wii mean while is still in it's infancy but it already has a growing list of games, that coupled with the fact that you can download classic Nintendo Games from the last 20 years through it's Virtual Console feature. 360 scores a 10, Wii 6.
Fun Factor- Close one but the Wii shaded it 10 to 8. Our rE-view team just loved the interactive physical style of play that the Wii offers.
Overall both machines are brilliant and both offers a different gaming experience, the one thing you can be sure of is whichever one you choose you're onto a winner.
Well that's what we think, why not sign up and tells what you think on our comments page.
