John left to go to the pub, so I decided to "make something"! Great. First I decided to make the cheesy scalloped potatoes he loves. Oops, we're out of milk.
How about macaroni and cheese. Oops, we're still out of milk. Normally, I would walk across the street and buy some. Oops, foot in a cast..that won't work. OK, I know, I'll make apple bread out of the apples scattered all over the back garden. Oops, no baking soda. How about apple cake. DARN (I cleaned that up for publication), still no baking soda and nowhere to get any even if I could walk.
Hmmmmm.. Many of you will think this is very amusing and as a friend of mine, who was a year older, and sadly who is no longer on this earth, once said to me.."Wow, you know how to cook and bake and all that stuff?".
This was coming from a woman with a husband and two kids..what DID they eat at her house? Yes, fool that I am, I do know how to "do that". When Mummy and Daddy would go out snowmobiling or boating with their little friends, Lynnie would bake things. What a boring child I was. (but well fed) Anyway, I scoured the Internet and finally found a recipe that didn't require "all the things I don't have". The oven is now baking a no crust apple pie. Of course it was an American recipe so of course I had to find a conversion chart and make sure the oven was set on the right temperature.
Life just is so darned complicated here at my house. The house smells like apples instead of cats, and hopefully, all will be well. Now, if I just had some Cool Whip (which I've never seen in this country) OR some vanilla ice cream! Stay tuned.
