A TEESSIDE construction worker has travelled thousands of miles to take part in a charity football match.

Michael McBride, 31, who is working in Russia, flew home to Teesside for the game.

Mr McBride and his brother, Kevin, 33, along with friends Chris Simpson and Gary Llewellyn, organised the match in memory of the brothers' father, also Kevin, who died from bowel cancer in 2004.

They have organised a charity football match every year since.

Last year's game raised £4,000. This year's match raised £5,700 which will be shared by the Holistic Cancer Unit, at the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Veronica McBride, the brothers' aunt, said: "Our heartfelt thanks go to all those who sponsored, supported and attended the match. Michael flew all the way from Russia, where he works, to play."
