MORE young people are to be given career opportunities with the extension of an apprenticeship scheme.
Since North Yorkshire County Council launched its Real Start scheme, in September last year, 70 people between the ages of 16 and 24 have been given apprenticeships with the authority.
In the wake of that success, the scheme is to be continued, with the council pledging to support another 120 apprentices during the next 12 months.
The scheme is an attempt to provide employment and career opportunities in North Yorkshire to balance those of the major neighbouring urban areas such as Leeds.
However, it also has the second aim of ensuring the authority maintains an influx of younger people into its workforce.
The county's executive member for corporate services, Carl Les, said: "The apprentices we took on have gained much in the way of motivation and self-esteem.
"Young people bring new and fresh ideas which, over time, can help to benefit and improve the services that the council offers to the public."
The Real Start scheme, which is supported by partner organisations such as Training Provider, the North East Chamber of Commerce, and the Learning and Skills Council, has led to apprenticeships across the council's activities.
