FITNESS fanatics were given the chance to try a new workout at the weekend.

Sherburn Leisure Centre held a Body Training Systems (BTS) taster session to mark the launch of the programme at Durham City Council's leisure centres.

The system, devised in New Zealand, includes body combat, combining self-defence moves such as karate and boxing, body balance, a mix of Eastern disciplines such as yoga and tai chi, body attack, which combines aerobics, strength and stabilisation exercises, and body jam, dance and exercise.

Helen Stockport, the council's physical activities co-ordinator, said: "We had a really good turnout, about 124 people. We had ten to 15 males and we would like more males to take part.

"At our exercise classes, we cater for a wide range of users as there is no single workout that suits everyone.

"The BTS programme is choreographed to music and routines are updated every 12 weeks. The taster sessions this weekend were a great opportunity for people to come and try the classes."

The sessions are at the council's five leisure centres and cost £4 each. For more information, visit the council's website www.durhamcity.gov.uk
