A WAIT of more than 50 years is almost over for villagers who live near a former quarry.
Residents in Newfield, near Bishop Auckland, have been looking forward to the day work to fill in the Todhills landfill site is completed.
As of yesterday, no more tipping is allowed on the land, with a project of restoration - including tree planting and landscaping - due to replace the waste and machinery.
Initially, Premier Waste Management, which owns and operates the site, had been due to leave on March 31, but was given a six-month extension after delays caused by bad weather.
There is talk of a street party to celebrate the end of work.
Councillor Phil Graham said: "There have been years of frustration and the villagers have had to put up with the noise and smell and filth from the landfill.
"It's been deeply frustrating, but we are delighted that they are finally on target to complete the work."
Coun Graham said that talks between residents and the waste firm - in the form of regular liaison groups - had worked, and would continue even after filling stops.
A meeting will take place on Wednesday.
A spokesman for Premier Waste Management confirmed that the site was currently being capped.
