A GROUP of schoolchildren became celebrities in their home village this week.
Six pupils from Bearpark Primary School, in County Durham, performed the honours at the reopening of the village Co-op store on Thursday.
They cut the ribbon in front of staff and customers to herald the re-launch, following a £220,000 refurbishment.
Store manager Julian Weetman gave them a guided tour of the premises, in Auton Stile, Bearpark.
He also presented them each with a goody bag, filled with a mixture of healthy and sweet treats.
The school has also received £200 to go towards general funds, as a thankyou from the Co-op.
Jan Bradley, the school's assistant headteacher, who accompanied the mini-VIPs, said they were selected in a draw from the 22 members of their class.
"They were all desperate to go, so the winners were delighted," said Mrs Bradley.
"They then had a nice look round the store and they particularly enjoyed the display they have put up for Hallowe'en."
Mrs Bradley said, on their return from the store, the children were happy to share the contents of their goody bags with classmates.
The store reopened after a five-day closure. Mr Weetman thanked his dozen-strong workforce for the extra hours they put in to have the premises ready in time for the reopening.
He said it appeared to be worthwhile, judging by the feedback from customers.
"It's been a complete transformation, it looks different all round, but the response has been fantastic," he said.
The store features modern decor, a new access-for-all entrance and eco-friendly refrigeration.
