VOTERS are going to the polls today in two North-East by-elections that could help decide whether the Prime Minister calls a general election this year.
Gordon Brown is under pressure to call a snap election and cash in on his popularity.
The Prime Minister will be watching the results of today's council by-elections in Washington and Chester-Le-Street for signs that Labour's support is holding solid in the North-East.
Voters are going to the polls to decide on the Washington East seat that became vacant when former councillor Neil Macknight left the area.
Voting is also taking place in the Chester-Le-Street Central ward following the death of Labour member and former council chairman Gordon Kerr.
