POLICE are appealing for witnesses after two youths launched an unprovoked attack on a man returning home from work.
The 27-year-old victim was walking past Bell's stores, in Brancepeth Road, Ferryhill, at about 10.20pm, on Monday, when he became aware of two youths.
The pair followed him. As they approached Cleves Cross sheltered housing complex, one of the youths threw a punch.
The man tried to continue and walked up some steps before they both set about him on the green area at the front of Cleves Cross Grange.
After several punches to his head and face and at least one kick to the ribs, the attackers made off.
The victim was left with cuts, bruises and swellings to his face, and a burst upper lip.
PC Elizabeth Graham said: "This was a totally unprovoked and vicious attack on a man who was simply walking home, minding his own business.
"I would like to hear from anyone who has information. In particular, I am hoping to trace two women who were at the bus stop outside Bell's store at around this time.
"They may have witnessed part of what happened and might be able to identify the suspects."
Both youths were in their mid to late teens.
One had blond shaved hair, was stocky and wore a white England football shirt and tracksuit bottoms.
The other had dark hair, was slim and wearing dark clothing.
They were both 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in.
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Graham, at Spennymoor, on 0845-60-60-365.
