Jamie T - Panic Prevention Perky, fun 21 year old newcomer Jamie Treays (or Jamie T) adds to the new found Thamesbeat scene with his debut album Panic Prevention. Joining artists such as Lily Allen and Larrikin Love in this new genre, which features artists with strong London accents, usually from around Wimbledon, singing funky and fresh music, he has hit the underground scene with a bang.
- Brand New Bass Guitar **** A funky upbeat song about a guy considering buying a handgun to shoot everyone but ends up spending all his money on a bass guitar and writing a song about it. With a prominent bass line and Jamie's crazy voice this is the perfect start to his debut album.
- Salvador *** Not his best song but certainly upbeat and even though the guitar is considerably disappointing he makes up with it with perky lyrics and an enjoyable jazz streak.
- Calm Down Dearest ***** A humorous start to a song, he begins by slurring/singing lyrics about being drunk and subtlety kicks in to a mellow beat, singing about a self destructing mission involving alcohol and drugs, which he confirmed was part of a personal experience (not himself) to Edith Bowman in a Radio 1 interview December 2006. This song deserves five starts for both its catchy beat and the depth you don't seem to realise until you have sat and purposely listened to the lyrics.
- So Lonely Was The Ballad *** A harmonic ballad' that provides for easy listening and general chill out music. Not as catchy as some of the other songs and certainly has a sense of ambiguity to it. Most fans like to believe it is about him looking back on his life experiences and his views on stereotypes, though the beauty of the song is that it could be seen in a number of ways, depending on your own personal experiences.
- Back In The Game **** It isn't beautifully written and it isn't his best work, but there is something about this song that is going to make me give it 4 stars. Although the initial chorus is quite catchy and the lyrics do make sense, I think the general attraction is the acoustic bass, the only instrument to be heard in this song bar Jamie's voice that gives it the melodic, relaxed tone.
- Operation ***** Without a doubt one of his best songs. Listen to it once and it'll be in your head, it is one of the catchiest songs I have ever heard, especially if you are a fan of Jamie's. With an outstanding, funky bass beat and a keyboard to accompany it perfectly, this song works wonders in creating a cheery, optimistic mood. The song starts with comical samples and some rather bizarre noises, before kicking in to a cheap drum-machine grind with busy lyrics.
- Sheila ***** Best Song Of The Album A heartbreaking story from a girl who falls drunk into a river and drowns, to another who can't take the unpleasant life she leads anymore and proceeds to kill herself at the exact same time, 10:30. Who would have thought from the upbeat funky beat this song could hold so much depth. From the humorous Sherlock Holmes voice samples to the repeated mention of his hometown London' this song deserves five stars and the best song of the album.
- Pacemaker **** Fast talking and energetic with a vibrant bass beat is the only way to illustrate this song. Referring to the hazardous, unsafe streets of London, Jamie's lyrics hit home and you can undoubtedly hear some lyrics also featured in some of Jamie's other songs.
- Dry Off Your Cheeks **** An overall dingy feel with funky keyboard sounds and his traditional bass guitar, this song seems to go in a different direction musically to the others, but is nevertheless an impressive song with groovy lyrics.
- Ike And Tina ***** Although the song title refers to one of the most popular R&B ensembles to ever occur in the history of music, the lyrics reveal much more. With constant drug references and a relaxed attitude towards consuming them, this song could be direct indication towards the distressing story of Ike and his drug addiction that turned his and his family's lives upside down. Of course this song could be misconstrued by an older generation as being another typically high drug referenced bragging song, Jamie goes far into his depths to not to be concerned. A brilliant song with a gleaming intro and a beautiful bass line.
- If You Got The Money ***** One of Jamie's most popular songs and it certainly went down a treat at Leeds festival this year. A catchy tune about Jamie's views on typical lads spending too much time and money going out and not enough on their girlfriends. If there were any song I'd recommend it would be this one. It isn't the best, but it fun and it's funky and it'll get anyone singing, especially to his vocals of "De Dom De Dom De". Undoubtedly 5 stars.
- Alicia Quays **** An almost 7 minute long demo that was previously named Alicia Keys, this song still seems to hold that sense of ambiguity all of his songs have. Most fans perceive the song as another of Jamie's knocks at nights out and it certainly sounds that way. Some angry lyrics, but overall one of his better songs, 4 stars.
- Northern Line **** A quirky ska song about running away through the London underground, another reference to his hometown it seems Jamie likes to sing about what he knows best. A vibrant backing track and a catchy chorus, this song is last but certainly not least.
Overall a five star brilliant album and I would recommend it to anyone. It's not everyone's preferred taste but if you enjoy the sounds of Lily Allen and The Mystery Jets this is a must have. The North American version of this album also features a fantastic cover of the classic Rawhide' alongside Lily Allen, perfect.
