SIX former students from a Barnard Castle school have been awarded scholarships to help them through university.
The A-level students, from Teesdale School, were selected for the awards by the trustees of the Mewhort Trust, set up in the memory of Phyllis Mewhort, who lived in Barnard Castle.
An award of £1,500 per year, for each of the three years of a degree course, was awarded to Kathryn Ipsen, who is studying history and French at Leeds University.
A further five awards of £1,000 per annum were made to Kane Mitchell, who is studying design media technology at Nottingham Trent; Naomi Philbrick, reading English at Stirling; Emma Maine, who will go to Newcastle to study maths; Jenny Smith, studying geography at Lancaster and Katherine Holder studying graphic design and marketing at Chester.
Headteacher Paul Harrison said: "I am delighted the trustees felt able to award six scholarships this year in recognition of the quality of the candidates."
