A YOUNG volunteer has been recognised for his work supporting young people in his community.
James Deane was crowned the town's Volunteer of the Year at last nights Darlington Volunteer Awards 2007.
The awards were presented in a ceremony at the Darlington Arena.
18-year-old Mr Deane, from Albert Hill, Darlington, was nominated for the award by Groundwork West Durham and Darlington.
He has supported young people in his local community and helped them make changes to the environmental quality of the area.
The awards ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 people, was compered by Peter Barron, Editor of The Northern Echo.
The night's guest of honour was legendary paralympic athlete, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, who presented the award to Mr Deane.
Mr Barron said: "As he is not much older than some of the group members, he serves only to inspire these young people to change their ways. He is a true role model.
Mr Deane said: "I am absolutely ecstatic. I had no idea I was going to get any award. I am over the moon, it has been an absolutely fantastic day."
The ceremony also saw prizes presented in a number of different categories.
A full report, with the names of all winners and nominees, will appear in The Northern Echo on Wednesday.
